A Surround Sound Bath?   What is it and how do I benefit?

By Suzanne Bélanger, RMT, Reiki Master, & Sound Bath Facilitator

Resonant tones for effortless deep de-stress; more calm and peace

Sometimes life makes us feel overloaded and caught in a spin cycle. If a mini retreat seems appealing, consider attending a Surround Sound Bath. A Surround Sound Bath is an immersive relaxation experience (sometimes called sound healing or singing bowl therapy).

You recline or sit in a calm, safe group environment.  You let your eyes close and simply witness your state of being while the tonal vibrations wash over you.  It’s that easy.

Your ears, brain and the pressure sensors of your body perceive vibrations and resonance of the instruments.  It's not about playing a melody, as that would engage your brain to follow along.  The goal is to give your hard working brain a rest, a chance to rebalance. This is about surrendering to the flow of the tones, allowing your nervous system to simply float in the present moment.  This permits a mindful presence with your inner landscape; a type of easy meditation.

Benefits include:

body tension dissolves

anxiety fades

clearing the mind is effortless; thoughts go quiet quickly

the nervous system shifts towards Rest and Restore’ and away from ‘Fight or Flight’

slowed breathing & heartbeat, improved digestion

increased capacity to cope with stress

more positive mood

better sleep

feeling centered & present

more inner tranquility, harmony & balance

In Surround Sound Baths, I often use:

crystal singing bowls & brass singing bowls

tuning forks & tingshas

chimes & gong

drum & rain stick

nature sounds & quiet words for grounding and breathing techniques

Sound baths have a long history of being used for healing and meditation in many different cultures.  More recently, they have been employed for those with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) eg war veterans or survivors of natural disasters, as well as everyday people who benefit from an occasional deep de-stress.

Sound baths entrain brain waves to drop into the Alpha and Delta frequency ranges of ‘Rest and Restore’ (which is slower than the ‘Fight or Flight’ waves).  Slower brain waves down-regulate our nervous system (especially the vagus nerve), which then signals muscles to relax, shed unwanted toxins and shift your thoughts towards balance.

Surround Sound Baths offer an extra advantage - I play the instruments near and around you.  Close proximity of the sound instruments magnifies the resonance with your body.   The resulting tissue memory is carried in your cells long after the session is over.

You’re invited to experience an effortless soothing and reset of your whole being with a profoundly therapeutic Surround Sound Bath.
